SYZE-DO 485 dissolved oxygen meter
Made by SYZE: optical DO, 0.1–20.0 mg/L, RS-485 Modbus RTU
Dissolved oxygen is the reading an aeration tank is run on: too little and the biology fails, too much and the blowers burn power for nothing. The SYZE-DO 485 measures it with an optical (luminescent) sensor - no membrane, no electrolyte - and gives the value over RS-485 Modbus RTU, so a data logger, a PLC or a SCADA reads it directly.
We make it ourselves, as we make our OCEMS data logger. It is read by the SYZE data logger and the OCEMS platform, and it is the sensor our STP automation uses for DO-based blower control.

Why optical, and why RS-485
- No membrane, no electrolyte
- A luminescent sensor has no membrane to tear and no electrolyte to top up, so there is less to go wrong between visits.
- Reads in low flow
- An optical sensor does not consume oxygen at its tip, so it does not need the sample to move past it to read correctly.
- One cable to the panel
- RS-485 Modbus RTU carries the reading digitally to the data logger or PLC; no 4–20 mA loop to calibrate at both ends.
- Its own port on our data logger
- Like every instrument on the SYZE data logger, the DO meter has its own RS485 port, so a fault in it cannot stop the other readings.
- Read by OCEMS
- DO is shown on the dashboard with the plant's other readings, with trends, alarms and reports, and reported to a board where a consent asks for it.
- Made and serviced by us
- Supplied, installed, checked and repaired by the same team that builds it.
Where it is used
- STP aeration tanks
- The DO value the blowers are run on. With our STP automation the PLC modulates the blowers to hold a DO set point, instead of running them flat out.
- STP outlets
- Dissolved oxygen in the treated effluent, alongside COD, BOD, TSS and pH from the SYZE-OCEMS-8P.
- ETPs
- Aeration and outlet DO at industrial effluent treatment plants.
- Aquaculture
- Pond and tank DO for fish and shrimp farms, read into a data logger with alarms when it falls.
Questions about the DO meter
Does the SYZE-DO 485 work with other makes of data logger or PLC?
Yes. It gives its reading over RS-485 Modbus RTU, which most data loggers, PLCs and SCADA gateways read directly. We supply the register map.
Can it be used for blower control?
Yes. In our STP automation the PLC reads the DO meter and modulates the blowers to a set point. The same reading goes to the SCADA screens and to OCEMS.
What does an optical DO sensor need in maintenance?
Cleaning of the sensor cap on a schedule, and a check against a reference. There is no membrane or electrolyte to replace.
Is DO reported to the pollution control boards?
Where a consent or a tender asks for it. The reading is on our platform in any case, and each parameter can be switched on or off for each board.
